Miracle Workers – Manifesting God’s Power
The gift of miracle-working is a purely charismatic gift, though numerous bishops, priests, and deacons throughout the ages have exercised it. We can distinguish between a hierarchical gift and a charismatic one by who possesses it. If every Bishop had the gift of miracle-working, that would mean that the gift was a part of the office of Bishop.
God doesn’t attach miraculous signs to a hierarchical office. Instead, Jesus says, “These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (Mark 16:17-18) The primary requirement for working miracles is faith in Jesus. This gift is available to anyone who believes.
Gifts of miracles feature prominently in stories about the saints. Raising people from the dead, multiplying food, restoring broken things, stopping fires with prayer, levitation… the list goes on and on. The person with this gift asks God for amazing things, and amazing things occur. God uses very ordinary people to accomplish these impossible things. Don’t think that it’s impossible for God to use you to make the miraculous a reality.
